“If you take a violin, you can make it sound 50 different ways. Not just pizzicato and played by the bow, but ponticello, and harmonics, and tremolos. If you take an oboe and play it, there’s about one way you can make it sound: like an oboe

Since 2008, Queens Music Academy (formerly Sunnyside String School) has led the effort to nurture our neighborhood children and encouraged their bold expression through music and art.

Our Mission

Our school follows Dr. Suzuki’s philosophy.  He reasoned that if children have the skill to acquire their mother tongue, then they have the necessary ability to become proficient on a musical instrument. He pioneered the idea that any pre-school age child could begin to play the violin if learning steps were small enough and if the instrument was scaled down to fit their body.

We are a comprehensive music school. Course offerings include private instruction for all orchestral and band instruments (violin, cello, viola, flute, saxophones, clarinet, trombone and trumpet), as well as piano, voice, guitar, and composition.  Also ensembles including orchestra, chamber music, Rock Band; and group classes for Suzuki violin and cello.

Enrichment Classes

Our Enrichment programs (Mondays-Thursdays) are designed for children aged 4-12 years old. Participants will explore Art, Music, Science, Theater and Legos on their respective weekdays. No Enrichment classes during school holidays. However, Pop Up Camps available on most of these holidays (see Pop Up Camp dates list; Pop Up Camps must be registered for separately). See full Fall Enrichment calendar below for a list of all class dates.  All weekly enrichment classes are $30 except Chorus and Orchestra. Pick up from ps 11 and St. Sebastian for Woodside location/ pick up from ps 150 might be available with minimum 4 participants (extra $10) and extended hour available (extra $10).  Please inquire.

Teaching artist Leontine Greenberg makes paintings, puppets, and props for galleries and theater companies around the country. In November 2016, her work was exhibited at AFA Gallery in SoHo.

Saturday Arts & Crafts Class with Ms. Yejin Bae

What better way is there to start off the weekend with hands-on creativity along with fellow artist-friends! Our arts & crafts classes every Saturday encourage children to explore various materials and apply unique methods for creating art projects ranging from environmental art, recycle art, pattern designs, weaving, collages, and many more!

Saturdays 10-11 am at Sunnyside Location (Ten sessions x $20)

Creative Lego Workshop

By popular demand our LEGO Workshop returns in January as a regular, semester-long class! The class will cover engineering basics, while focusing on the creative and artistic side of Lego building. So on top of learning how to build strong and functional structures and how to speak Lego-talk (“1x4”, “holy beams”, etc.), kids will also be introduced to concepts like complimentary colors, layers of detail, and imagining projects in both large and small scales. When group size allows, we will occasionally split into teams for some friendly, fun competition. Mr. Jeff has dreamed up fun projects in themes that include 'Impossible' Bridges, Three Eras of NASA Spaceships, Open-walled Interiors (house, restaurant, etc.), and more.

  • Creative Lego Workshop Tuesday at Sunnyside 4:15-5:15pm(10 sessions x$30)
  • Creative Lego Workshop Wednesdays at Woodside 4:15-5:15pm(10 sessions x $30)

Music For Little Mozart

Music for Little Mozart Series is made especially for the preschool age group (four-, five- and six-year-olds). This curriculum provides a balance between the discipline necessary for playing the piano and the enjoyment one receives from the process of music making. Three correlating books (Music Lesson Book, Music Workbook and Music Discovery Book) at each of four levels guide the children through a comprehensive approach to musical learning, using the piano over approximately a two-year period. Twice a week lesson required.

$30 private lesson + $20/45 min Group class (Thursdays 4:15-5/ Sundays 2:30-3:15) x 10 weeks=$500

“Check out this hidden art germ Afterschool-Sunnyside String School Art Class inspired by pop-art star Jeff Koons available to youngsters in Sunnyside, they are so fortunate!”

— Eli Rosenburg, NY Daily News

“Actively learning to play an instrument can help a child’s academic achievement... the study showed that students who played instruments in class had more improved neural processing than the children who attended the music appreciation group.”... “We like to say that ‘making music matters,’” said Kraus. “Because it is only through the active generation and manipulation of sound that music can rewire the brain. ”

“Choi Fairbanks is an amazing violin instructor! Choi is skilled at engaging a small child and making the violin lessons so much fun through music education & play. My son gets more than a violin lesson when he meets with Choi. That is, his fine motor skills, attention span and ability to distinguish sounds has greatly improved. My son is only 3.5 years old and he always looks forward to his violin lessons!”

“This is great! My 3 year old goes here and she loves Miss Choi! She is doing both piano and violin. When my other baby will turn 3, I’ll bring her too!! Big LIKE!”

“Our 7-year old started with Ms. Choi with violin when he was 4, but when he heard Choi perform on her cello at a recital, he insisted on switching - and has never looked back. Now, he’s almost done with Suzuki book 2, and I’m continually impressed with his progress on the cello. Choi’s a great teacher - warm, but firm and keeps him focused. His 5-year old sister started violin at Sunnyside about 1 1/2 years ago too - her current teacher, Jessica, is great with kids and really keeps her engaged and motivated to practice! We are also big fans of Sunnyside’s pop-up and summer camp options. The kids do creative craft projects, play with legos, practice instruments, go to the park - and in the summer, my son even got to play in the rock band! They are our “go-to” for all school holidays when we have to work. The programming is much more engaging than other pop-up camps we’ve tried. The kids always come home with a cool craft and they learned something!”

“My daughter has been attending Sunnyside String School since kindergarten. She loves the art there which ranges the gamet from creating artwork based on weaving, creating robots from recycled materials to Jeff Koons inspired crafts. In addition to that they have music, lego and theater. The teachers including ms. Choi teach the kids so well. In addition they also provide after school care where the children can do homework, before their specialty. It’s a real boon to the neighborhood! ”

“Our 6 year old son has been taking piano with Ms. Choi for two years. The teacher is patient and knows how to work with children. Right now he is making up his own songs to learn the notes! Highly recommended. ”
